The England women’s football team returned to the UK after a remarkable victory in Euro 2025 against Spain. The triumphant return was celebrated by numerous enthusiastic fans who gathered at Southend Airport, waving flags and wearing England’s national kits, eagerly anticipating the arrival of the victorious squad.
Upon arrival, the team was honored at a special reception held at Downing Street, hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner. The players presented a signed England shirt, and the event featured refreshments in the scenic garden of Number 10. Plans for a celebratory parade through central London, including a ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial, were also announced, emphasizing the nation’s pride in the team’s accomplishment.
Thanks to the decisive penalty shootout victory, England successfully defended their European title, marking the first time any English team has secured a major tournament win on foreign soil. In England, over 16 million viewers tuned in to watch this historic match, making it the most-watched TV event of the year to date.
The team’s aircraft bore the England badge and the word “Home,” symbolizing their successful return. Angela Rayner congratulated the team, expressing immense national pride and commending them for being shining representatives of women’s football. England’s manager, Sarina Wiegman, humorously acknowledged the tense nature of the matches, lauding the team’s exceptional performance and resilience.
Upon landing, team captain Leah Williamson and coach Sarina Wiegman were the first to exit the airplane and were soon joined by the entire team for a commemorative photo. Subsequently, they proceeded to the Downing Street reception dressed in formal attire.
The celebratory event was complemented by a video call with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who expressed his appreciation, highlighting the team’s significant impact during the tournament.
The government, recognizing the growing momentum of women’s football, announced plans to double the availability of sports facilities for women and girls, as well as initiatives to replicate the successes seen in women’s football across other sports disciplines. Notably, King Charles III extended his appreciation and commended the team for their incredible achievements, with potential plans for an additional royal reception in the autumn.
Discussions of official honors for the team members were acknowledged, with hopes that the team’s achievements would be recognized through nominations in due course. While calls for a national bank holiday to celebrate the win were dismissed, Royal Mail announced commemorative postmarks as a tribute to the team’s success, capturing the sentiment of national pride instilled by the women’s outstanding performance.
